Sayaw Sa Bankgo

Sayaw Sa Bangko is a traditional Filipino dance I participated in for Vanderbilt’s Lunar New Year Festival in 2020. Since then, I’ve become our choreographer for LNYF 2022 and 2023!

To help bring our team together, I design stickers every year that represented the playfulness and tradition of the dance.

Inspiration

Flag of the Philippines

As our dance is a Filipino tradition, I wanted to reflect that in the finished design. I went off of the color palette of the flag of the Philippines—red, yellow, and blue. I brightened the colors a bit to be more vibrant.

Movement

Sayaw Sa Bangko is a dance involving a lot of dancing and partnership. Every member is paired up and must trust their partner to help them clear the benches as the stacks get higher and higher. I drew from these concepts of fluid motion from the constant jumping and parabolic shapes that come from each member going over the benches. I also wanted the words to be interconnected to reflect the synergy of each partnership.

Design Iterations

Once I chose my finalized design, I scanned the sketch into Photoshop and rasterized it to clean it up and create different color combinations.

Final Product

After choosing a design that incorporated all three colors of the Filipino flag, I printed it into stickers for the team to use. Not only did this result in more unity among the group, but it allowed for more advertising for both the showcase and our dance. Different iterations of the design were used for 2020 and 2023.

In 2022, I drew upon the same design elements and ideas of movement and color to create the 2022 design.
